Julie Guthrie

Julie received her degree in Education and Special Education from Eastern Michigan University. Her training focused on how to teach students with hearing, language, and communication challenges, and following graduation, she spent a few years teaching teens with multiple disabilities at a school for deaf-blind students. This amazing, challenging teaching experience gave her life skills beyond what she would ever have anticipated! During the following eighteen years, Julie used her teaching skills to lead small group Bible studies, literary book groups, and more recently, to homeschool her children.

Julie’s love of reading began as a little girl snuggled up with big sisters and books on the family couch and continues to this day, as she often reads with and for her students and, of course, for her own enjoyment. Her greatest pandemic sadness (after not seeing family) was the loss of the ability to go to the local library and immerse herself in quiet and books.

Julie’s love for writing began as a child, too (ask about her award winning story about a little black dog named Pepper), but truly blossomed while reading and editing her husband’s doctoral dissertation (it was inspiring!) while at the same time keeping up steady electronic communication with family overseas. Julie added to her writing knowledge and experience by taking creative and spiritual writing courses at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, and Belmont University.

When she is not reading or writing (or reading a student’s writing), Julie enjoys reminiscing about the years she spent living in Scotland with her husband, Steve, and their children. She also enjoys looking for new recipes to try, watching British TV shows, and spending time with her family. Julie has made her home in Nashville since 2005, and has been a part of the Academy Tutorial community since 2009 as a parent, since 2016 as a tutor, and since 2017 as a board member. She is currently teaching Literature and Composition to the Academy’s brilliant 8th Graders and a fascinating quarter of Russian Literature for the seniors.
